A lot has changed since a compact cassette had a data storage capacity equivalent of 660 kilobytes per side of a 90-minute tape. Cassette tapes were made of a polyester type plastic film with a magnetic coating. DuPont the inventor of the particle und used chromium dioxide for magnetic recording tape.

The orientation and alignment of the magnetic particles which are positioned one next to the other reduce the interaction between opposite magnetic forces. The tape will, then, produce a stronger signal, thanks to the reduction of demagnetization effects as seen above, but also a clearer signal since the ‘noise‘, that is inherent to the magnetic field is being reduced.

Digital Betacam and additionally, HDCAM & HDCAM SR, are using the same shape videocassettes, meaning vaults and other storage facilities do not have to be changed if upgrading is needed.
The original Betacam format was launched in 1982. At that time it was an analog component video format. In 1986, Betacam SP was developed, which improved horizontal resolution to 340 lines from 300 lines of horizontal luminance resolution and 120 lines chrominance resolution in the beginning. Betacam SX is a digital version of Betacam SP introduced in 1996 using the MPEG 4:2:2 format.
MPEG IMX is a 2001 development of the Digital Betacam format. Digital video compression uses H.262/MPEG-2 Part 2 encoding at a higher bitrate than Betacam SX: 30 Mbit/s. HDCAM, introduced in 1997, was the first HD format available. HDCAM SR, introduced in 2003 , which is using a higher particle density tape and is capable of recording in 10 bits (4:2:2 or 4:4:4 RGB with a bitrate of 440 Mbit/s).

From audio and Video to Data storage.
In 2014 FUJIFILM Corporation President Shigehiro Nakajima announced that in conjunction with IBM, a new record in areal data density of 85.9 billion bits per square inch on cost-efficient linear magnetic particulate tape has been achieved. This breakthrough in data density equates to a standard LTO cartridge capable of storing up to 154 terabytes of uncompressed data. The enhanced NANOCUBIC technology decreases the BaFe magnetic particle volume, which is essential for high density data recording.
The Growth in Tape:
Demand for tape is being fuelled by unrelenting data growth, significant technological advancements, tape’s highly favourable economics, the growing requirements to maintain access to data “forever” emanating from regulatory, compliance or governance requirements, and the big data demand for large amounts of data to be analysed and monetized in the future.
Tape is the most cost effective and greenest form of storage, using zero power when not in use meaning very large TCO savings, density increases year by year so the actual storage costs drops parallel to the cartridges density growth.
